Are relaxers and fibroid tumors connected in some way? This has been going around the Internet for a while now and it is said relaxers can cause problems in African-American woman between 8-19 years of age.

Before we actually get to the statistics and data that scientist calculated, we should know what exactly are fibroids? Fibroids are tumors that grow in the uterus. Luckily they are not cancerous in any way, but they are made up of muscle fibers that can grow to the size of a pea or grow as big as a melon. It’s estimated 20-50% of woman will experience or have experienced fibroids in their lifetime.

Now what do relaxers have to do with this? It is said that a new study in the American Journal of Epidemiology has linked hair relaxers to fibroids (uterine) and early puberty in young girls.

Scientist have concluded that between 1997-2009 that the rate of fibroids was two-three times higher than normal and it was linked to chemical exposure through scalp lesions and burns from hair relaxers.

Woman who experienced their first menstrual period before the age of ten have a higher chance of gaining uterine fibroids.

It was studied later on that African-American girls and woman who used relaxers reached puberty a lot faster than most racial groups.

Sadly though since the hair care industry that produced relaxers and other products isn’t actually regulated by the FDA it makes it harder to find a real definite problem in how relaxers are harmful to you.

I've tried many natural hair gels (most for some reason contain glycerin) and when it's hot and humid my hair looks a hot mess. However, this gel is glycerin free and has a strong hold so less is more. It also defines my curls for at least a week and plays very well with other products in its line and outside of its line. I recommend to every curly girl who is either glycerin sensitive or like me does not like it in their gels. Please don't change the formula or discontinue
