Let's Talk Hair Porosity

Hair porosity means how well moisture penetrates the cuticle. There are three different porosity levels your hair can fall into and  keep in mind, you can have a combination of the three in different parts of your hair too.

This is also key to help know what types of products you should buy. Hair texture is not the way to figure out your hair needs.  Now you have a foundation for how to kick start your hair journey the right way. When you know better you do better!

Low Porosity is when your hairs cuticle layer is tightly packed and lays flat. The cuticle tends to lay tightly together which makes it difficult for water to pass through. If you have low porosity hair, you will notice that you have a hard time with the hair absorbing moisture and repels water when you attempt to wet it.

Tip: Use water based liquid or light weight leave in moisturizers (hair milks), light oils such as jojoba, grapseed, or sweet almond oil.

Medium Porosity is unicorn status! If you are lucky enough to fall into this category, you get a gold star. This type has no issue with being moisturized and retains moisture very well.

Tip: Use moisturizing conditioners that can be used as a leaving or rinse out, preferably silicone free. Then seal with a light oil. Steer clear of heavy protein conditioners because the protein bulid up on your hair which will result in dry hair.

High Porosity hair is usually damaged or over processed from hair color, relaxers or heat damage which causes the cuticle layer to be raised. Surprisingly, having too much moisture on a regular basis can make your hair become highly porous. This is why a good protein/moisture balance is always key in your regimen (try our Ayurvedic Hair Treatment System).

Tip: Use moisture/protein balance deep conditioner weekly or bi-weekly. Seal with butters such as Shea Butter, Mango Butter and oils like olive oil or castor oil. After shampoo, rinse with apple cider vinegar to help close the cuticle.  Knowing your hair porosity helps you determine how much moisture your hair needs on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

This is also key to help know what types of products you should buy. Hair texture is not the way to figure out your hair needs.  Now you have a foundation for how to kick start your hair journey the right way. When you know better you do better!
